When you or someone you love is struggling with depression, it can be a heartbreaking experience for all involved. People who have depression have problems thinking, acting, behaving, and even getting through the day. Sometimes, depression can feel as though one is living in a black hole, like an ever-present sense of impending doom is looming over them.
There are a number of symptoms that can present themselves when an adult is suffering from depression. In addition to experiencing feelings of sadness, many individuals often feel empty, angry, and/or apathetic about their world, and they may begin to socially isolate themselves. Fortunately, while depression can make a person feel hopeless about his or her future, it is a very treatable illness. With proper care, therapeutic interventions, self-care strategies, and the loving support of friends and family, most adults are able to recover from this illness and go on to lead happy, productive lives.
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we understand the needs of our those clients who are faced with depression and make every effort to teach them the skills necessary to cope with stress, manage depression symptoms, and work toward achieving a brighter future. We offer life-altering care for adults who are struggling with depression and other challenges in a safe, serene, and confidential environment. We understand that depression treatment is never one-size-fits-all, so we spend the necessary time evaluating and getting to know each person we meet in order to develop a plan of care that meets all of his or her needs. We are ready to help you or your loved one make the journey away from depression and toward a life filled with hope.
How to Help a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
If your loved one has been struggling with depression, the entire family unit has likely been affected. You may realize that your loved one needs help to recover from this chronic, treatable illness, but you may fear that approaching the subject could make things worse. Here are some tips for helping your loved one seek treatment for depression:
Educate yourself: Many of the frustrating behaviors your loved one is exhibiting are actually symptoms of depression – depression can manifest itself in many different ways in different people. Learn about the symptoms of depression, ways it can be treated, and self-care strategies needed to effectively recover.
Offer support: People who are depressed may feel so badly about themselves that they do not believe they are worthy of the love and support of others. Reassure your loved one that he or she is loved and that, no matter what, you will be there for him or her.
Research treatment options: There are a number of options available for treating depression. Many people begin their journey to recovery in an inpatient center where they are able to develop coping skills and adjust medication as-needed to ensure that they are on the right path. Offer to make appointments at local treatment centers and go with your loved one to his or her visit to the center.
Why Consider Treatment at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
If you or someone you love has been facing depression, it may be a very lonesome time for all involved. Adults who are severely depressed often have challenges with activities of daily life. It may become very hard to perform well at work, leading to a deterioration in one’s self-esteem. Additionally, adults who are struggling with depression often feel as though they are worthless, that things will never improve, and that they are entirely alone. Sometimes, people who are depressed even contemplate ending their own lives. But it is important to know that hope is not lost. You or your loved one do not have to go through this alone.
Many people begin their recovery from serious depression at an inpatient treatment center in order to stabilize acute crises and start the recovery process. An inpatient treatment center offers you the chance to escape the stress and worries of daily life and focus upon what truly matters – recovery and healing. An inpatient treatment program allows for management of current crises, the provision of a number of therapeutic interventions, and a medication regime, as well as offering a nurturing environment that will help you begin your recovery journey from depression. A safe, secure environment that addresses all of your needs is the ideal place to begin healing.

Treatment Options Offered at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
When you come to our inpatient treatment center for care for your depression, you will begin your healing journey by undergoing an initial assessment, which will allow us to determine your presenting concerns. The treatment team will take the results of these evaluations and sit down with you in order to create a plan of care for your stay with us that meets all of your needs. Various aspects that may be a part of your treatment plan include the following:
Medication management: Often, people who are struggling with depression require medication in order to alleviate their distressing symptoms. This may include a combination of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety agents. All medication decisions will be made by the treatment team and evaluated for efficacy.
Individual therapy: Individual therapy is offered on an as-needed basis for those in our inpatient program. During these sessions, you may work with a therapist to learn more about depression, understand treatment options, and develop strategies to manage stress.
Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are offered four times each day and cover a range of topics relevant to depression. During these sessions, you will be able to work with others to learn more about depression, treatment, and co-occurring disorders, while also processing through your personal experiences and giving and receiving support to and from others who may have had similar experiences. Group topics may include stress management, life skills, and positive ways to manage your emotions.
Family therapy: At Greenleaf, we offer family therapy and education on an as-needed basis for those in our inpatient program. Family therapy may include a discussion as to the ways in which depression has impacted your family, ways they can support you in your recovery, and issues within the family dynamic that may have impacted the development of depression.
Recreational therapy: Recreational therapy is held once per day for adults and includes a variety of therapeutic activities that help to heal the body and mind. Examples of such activities may include time in the gym, swimming, tennis, and basketball.
As Greenleaf aims to provide a number of healing approaches, we offer several other benefits for our inpatient clients, including:
- Onsite meetings with outside counselors
- Case management
- A.A. meetings
- N.A. meetings
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we are proud to offer a variety of levels of care for our clients so that we are able to meet their ongoing needs. As discharge approaches, you will work closely with your treatment team to create an aftercare plan that assists you in sustaining lifelong recovery. We offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults that meets four hours per day. This program is designed to allow you to slowly reintegrate back into your regular life while continuing to work on healing. Some clients find that they have made enough progress in our inpatient program that they are able to return home with referrals to outpatient therapy and/or available community resources. Greenleaf also holds an aftercare program each Thursday evening to assess each client’s ongoing wellbeing and assist with any roadblocks they may have come across while returning to their daily lives.
