Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that is characterized by severe fluctuations in a person’s emotions which causes him or her to experience feelings of extreme instability. The chronic conflicts that occur inside the minds of people with BPD oftentimes lead them to act out in unorthodox ways, which can be confusing to those around them. The symptoms of borderline personality disorder can be debilitating not only mentally, but physically as well. They will affect not only the individual suffering from the disorder, but also the friends, family, and loved ones of that person as well. Individuals with BPD are also commonly known to participate in reckless and impulsive behaviors as they struggle with the inner turmoil that they are constantly experiencing.
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we recognize how difficult living a life with borderline personality disorder can be. For this reason, we offer treatment options that are specifically designed to meet the unique needs of people who struggle with this illness. We make it our goal to provide you with the tools necessary to overcome the symptoms that you are struggling with while developing the skills you need to move past this very trying time in your life. We are dedicated to providing everyone who comes to us for treatment with the highest quality of care in the most comfortable environment possible. Our facility has recently undergone an extensive renovation, with each unit being completely remodeled. Additionally, all the furnishings throughout the hospital have been replaced and are brand new, allowing us to provide care in a clean and modern atmosphere.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
If you have a loved one who is displaying symptoms of borderline personality disorder, you may be experiencing a wide variety of emotions. You may be confused by the strange ways that you have seen him or her acting, and you may feel helpless as to what you can do to help. You may notice that one day he or she seems to be acting fine, but that the next day your loved one seems to act in a way that is the complete opposite of how you know him or her to be. If you are debating whether or not your loved one is in need of treatment, here are some signs to look for:
- One day feeling overly attached to a person, and the following day acting spiteful or hateful towards that same person
- Engaging in self-harming behaviors
- Experiencing an inability to control anger
- Excessive and hysterical crying episodes
- Extreme reactions to perceived abandonment, even when there is no true evidence of the abandonment occurring
- Paranoia, delusions, and dissociation
- Episodes of derealization and depersonalization
- Unstable, fluctuating image of one’s self
- Extreme mood swings
- Suicidal thoughts and attempts
If these are things that you have noticed in your loved one, then it is imperative that you help him or her find treatment as soon as possible. If left untreated, your loved one’s symptoms will only continue to worsen, potentially leading to devastating consequences.
Why Consider Treatment at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
If left untreated, the symptoms of borderline personality disorder are most likely going to continually worsen over time. Without treatment, people suffering from BPD may find it difficult to simply get through the tasks and routines of their everyday lives. These people may experience a demoralized sense of self, which may lead them to participate in dangerous behaviors that put their lives at risk. Some individuals may turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to self-medicate, only further exacerbating their symptoms. People with BPD do not have to continue to suffer, they do not have to feel alone. There is help available.
Acute inpatient treatment programs have proven to be beneficial in treating the symptoms of borderline personality disorder. Inpatient programs are able to assess and determine each individual’s exact needs and develop treatment plans based solely on those unique needs. Not only will clients be provided with around-the-clock care in order help mediate their symptoms, but they will also be able to step away from the stresses of their everyday lives in order to focus solely on their recovery.
Program Philosophy and Benefits
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we recognize that our clients have walked a long path before reaching our doors and that they have faced a variety of complications along the way. It is our mission to accept our responsibility as the destination of the journey that has led them to us. We commit to giving one hundred percent of ourselves in effort and training in order to become experts in our field so that we can provide exceptional treatment and therapeutic programming in a safe environment. Our goal is to send our clients from our door onto the path to full recovery with the confidence they need to be successful.
Types of Treatment Offered at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
Upon arriving at Greenleaf, each client will participate in a comprehensive assessment in order to provide our staff with all of the information necessary to determine his or her exact treatment needs. Once the evaluation is complete, it will be reviewed by one of our psychiatrists in order to determine the appropriate level of care and to confirm admission. Our approach to treatment is client-centered, and all of our programs are designed to meet the individual needs of our clients through a compassionate approach that is led by a team of highly trained psychiatrists and mental health professionals. Some of the treatment methods that we use here at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital include:
Medication management: In many cases, medication is used to help alleviate some of the specific symptoms of borderline personality disorder. It may also be used to treat any co-occurring disorders that may exist. Clients who are prescribed medication will meet with a psychiatrist daily in order to ensure the therapeutic effectiveness of the medication, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary.
Individual therapy sessions are held on an as-needed basis and are meant to be a time where clients can meet privately with a therapist in order to learn how to cope with the symptoms of BPD and work towards developing coping skills and the other tools they need to help control their thoughts and regulate their emotions.
Group therapy sessions are held four times each day and cover a wide variety of topics. Some of the major topics that are discussed during these group sessions include anger management, stress management, and learning how to effectively express emotions and develop appropriate communication and life skills.
Family therapy sessions are held on an as-needed basis with the amount being increased or decreased depending upon the client’s individual treatment plan. Additionally, we offer educational sessions to the family members of our clients in order to help them learn more about borderline personality disorder and guide them in how they can best support their loved one.
Recreational therapy is held once a day and is a time where individuals are provided with the opportunity to participate in physical activities such as playing tennis and basketball or using our pool and gym facilities.
We also pride ourselves in the fact that we have working relationships with providers outside of our hospital. We allow outpatient therapists to come in and meet with their clients while being treated in our hospital, adding to the comfort level that we strive to provide for our clients.
Depending upon one’s specific treatment plan, A.A. and N.A. meetings are offered once per week.
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, in addition to our inpatient treatment center, we also offer outpatient treatment options for clients who are ready to step down from an inpatient level of care. We offer different outpatient tracks, including a substance abuse track and a mental health track. Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is designed to treat adults and meets for 4 hours a day. The partial hospitalization program typically lasts for a period of 2-4 weeks and offers group sessions that cover topics such as coping skills, relaxation, and anger management. During these programs, clients are also provided with weekly sessions with their therapist and weekly meetings with a psychiatrist for medication management. Some clients, on the other hand, might find that they are ready to return home. When the time to discharge from our program approaches, we work to set our clients up with outpatient therapists and outside aftercare programs, as well as help identify any appropriate community resources. Additionally, we offer an aftercare program every Thursday that is designed specifically to check in on clients who have been discharged from our programs.
