Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that is triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD can cause debilitating symptoms in those who are struggling with it. Individuals who have been diagnosed with PTSD may experience flashbacks, very vivid nightmares, and may be left with a constant feeling of anxiety or dread. While PTSD can affect all areas of a person’s life, through proper treatments and therapies, many adults are able to learn ways to cope with the symptoms and move on with their lives.
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we are dedicated to helping people who are struggling with mental health problems like PTSD and/or chemical dependency. Through our intensive inpatient program, adults are able to begin their recovery journeys. Our safe, serene environment is the perfect setting for healing and recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder to begin.
How to Help a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
If your loved one is suffering from PTSD, you may feel completely helpless as you try to determine if there is anything you can do to help him or her. Additionally, you may be struggling with feelings of fear or frustration as you see how much your loved one is struggling. Here are some ways in which you can help:
- Take the time to learn all that you can about PTSD so that you will be able to more fully understand what your loved one is going through.
- Offer to go to doctor visits with him or her.
- Tell your loved one that you are there to listen if he or she wants to talk.
- Plan family activities together.
- Encourage your loved one to remain in close contact with family and friends, preventing social withdrawal and isolation.
Why Seek Inpatient Treatment at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
Individuals who are struggling with posttraumatic stress disorder may notice that the symptoms they are experiencing are causing them to have significant difficulties on a daily basis. Individuals may find that they are no longer able to function at work, they may stop engaging in activities that they used to enjoy, and/or they may start to engage in self-destructive behaviors such as abusing drugs or alcohol. Others may have such severe anxiety that they are unable to leave the house at all. If not properly treated, these symptoms may get worse over time and can lead to even more complications.
An inpatient treatment program that can treat the specific difficulties associated with PTSD is often a very beneficial option for adults to achieve stabilization from their symptoms. Through an inpatient treatment program, individuals are given the tools needed to regain control of their lives. Different types of therapeutic methods, such as individual therapy and group therapy, can help people slowly begin to face what they find frightening so that they can effectively cope with their fears. Additionally, inpatient treatment can provide a safe place away from the stresses of daily life where individuals can truly focus on recovery.

Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, in addition to our inpatient programs, we offer outpatient treatment options for those who are ready to step down to a lower level of care. We offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults, which is held 4 hours a day. This program is designed to help clients remain successful in their recovery, while slowly integrating back into their daily lives. At the time of discharge, all clients will meet with their treatment teams who will set them up with an appropriate plan for aftercare programming. Some clients find it best to step down into PHP, while others are ready to be discharged home. Once clients are discharged from our outpatient treatment setting, we hold an aftercare program every Thursday evening in order to check in on their wellbeing.
