Foundations Recovery Residence: A Sober Living Environment for Men

As a means of providing a more stable living environment for certain clients who find themselves in a situation where the stresses and pressures of everyday life are overhwelming, we are proud to offer the Foundations Recovery Residence.

This innovative and dynamic program gives men the opportunity to develop and improve their coping skills and other essential strategies in a real-world setting, with the added benefit of living in a safe and supportive space while in our PHP.

Foundations Criteria

Foundations Criteria for Sober Living

Foundations Recovery Residence is a safe and secure sober living environment founded upon the practices and principles of the 12-Step recovery model, for clients who meet the following criteria:

  • Adult male, age 18 or above
  • Have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder
  • Currently participating in treatment at the PHP/IOP level, or just completed PHP/IOP care

Typical length of stay in PHP and IOP at Greenleaf is six to eight weeks. Clients who live in the Foundations Recovery Residence typically stay for six to nine months. Thus, Foundations is designed to overlap clients’ time in PHP/IOP after their first few months after treatment has ended.

12-Step Support

Therapy and 12-Step Support

As noted in the previous section, Foundations Recovery Residence is designed to support men in early recovery and help them integrate the lessons and guidance of the 12-Step recovery model into their everyday lives.

Participants will have been introduced to the 12-Step model during their time in PHP and IOP, and will have already taken their first steps toward joining the AA/NA community. While living at Foundations, they will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the 12-Step model and become more active in the AA/NA community, and will attend daily meetings during their time in the residence.

Men who are currently participating in PHP/IOP at Greenleaf will of course receive a broad range of therapeutic supports in those programs. Those who have completed PHP/IOP care will still have the opportunity to participate in group therapy while at Foundations.

Therapy at Foundations Recovery Residence includes three relapse prevention groups each week along with one weekly aftercare/continuing care support group.  Each group is led by either a licensed clinician or an experienced peer specialist.

At Foundations, we also understand that our residents may require services beyond what is provided at the residence, and we work closely with community providers that are able to offer the services that can best support men in early recovery.  We work with each individual to identify his needs and to provide appropriate referrals to community providers when necessary.

Daily Life

Daily Life at Foundations Recovery Residence

As is the case with all Greenleaf programs, life in the Foundations Recovery Residence is a personalized experience that will be influenced by each man’s strengths, needs, and treatment objectives. However, that personalized service exists within a structured framework, which typically includes the following elements:

Mornings: The Foundations day starts with breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a peer-led daily meditation, reading, and discussion. At 8:15 a.m., residents who are enrolled in PHP or IOP will be transported to the Greenleaf Hospital Outpatient Center to participate in group therapy.

Afternoons: Residents who are not participating in PHP or IOP will attend an offsite AA or NA meeting at noon.  All residents will return to the Greenleaf Hospital Outpatient Center to attend a relapse prevention group from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Residents who are not in PHP/IOP are encouraged to fill their afternoon hours with part-time employment or volunteer work. We believe that such efforts are essential to achieving successful recovery and pursuing a healthier and more productive future, and we partner with a local employment agency to help residents become self-supporting and prepare them for a post-treatment career.

Evenings: Residents will attend an offsite AA or NA meeting from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., followed by a peer-led wrap-up meeting at 9:30 p.m.

Discharge Planning

Discharge Planning & Continuing Care

Discharge planning is a point of emphasis at every level of care at Greenleaf. Prior to the end of a man’s time at Foundations Recovery Residence, he will have the opportunity to work with a peer specialist to develop a detailed discharge plan. The discharge planning process helps to ensure that men have the necessary support to make a successful transition out of care and continue on their path toward lifelong recovery.
